What is a Dual Fuel system? We’re glad you asked. A Dual Fuel system is a heat pump that uses gas or oil as a back up during severe weather. All heat pumps must have an auxiliary heat source when temperatures dip into the twenties. Most heat pumps use electric "strip" heat, like a plug-in bathroom heater. This type of heat is more expensive to use than the heat pump compressor, so when the temperature drops, so does the heat pumps efficiency. By using gas or oil as a backup instead of electric strip heat you can save money. With a dual fuel system you also have the option of using your gas or oil heat instead of the heat pump at any time. You can turn the thermostat up and down without paying the penalty of the heat strips coming on. Instead you bring on your gas or oil heat to quickly warm up your home or office.

If you have a gas or oil heating system that needs replacing you may want to consider a heat pump and use gas or oil for backup.
