That is how your AC dehumidifies. The catch is that this only works well when the system runs long enough, and steadily enough, to keep pulling water out of the air. Eastern North Carolina is a tough place to keep a home comfortable. Summers bring long stretches of heat and high humidity. Many local homes also sit over vented crawl spaces that pull damp air up into the living space. Between the frequent thunderstorms and weeks of muggy, still air, even a healthy air conditioner can struggle to keep indoor humidity comfortable. - Your AC is oversized and short-cycling. This is the most common culprit. An air conditioner that is too large for the home cools the air to the set temperature very quickly, then shuts off before it has run long enough to pull much moisture out of the air. These short, frequent cycles leave you with a cold, clammy home. Proper sizing matters far more than bigger-is-better.
- Your thermostat fan is set to "ON" instead of "AUTO." When the fan runs constantly, it keeps blowing air across the coil even after the cooling cycle ends. That moisture sitting on the coil gets released back into the air and pushed right back into your rooms. Keeping the fan on AUTO lets that condensation drain away as it should.
- A dirty filter or coil is choking airflow. A clogged filter or a grimy evaporator coil restricts airflow, hurts moisture removal, and can even cause the coil to ice over. Regular filter changes and clean coils are the foundation of good indoor air quality and proper dehumidification.
- Refrigerant is low or the system is aging. If your system is low on refrigerant or simply worn out, the coil may never get cold enough to condense moisture effectively. - Leaky or uninsulated ductwork is pulling in damp air. Ducts that run through a hot attic or a vented crawl space can draw in humid, unconditioned air through gaps and cracks, then distribute it throughout your home. - The condensate drain is clogged. Every air conditioning system removes moisture from the air as it cools, and that moisture must have a clear path to drain. - Your AC needs reinforcement. In some cases, nothing is actually malfunctioning. In a climate this humid, an air conditioner sized to cool your home is not designed to also function as a full-time moisture control system.
